TNR Certification Workshops in NYC

Attending a TNR certification workshop is the first step you should take to gain the knowledge and skills needed to help the feral and stray community cats in your area. Upon completion of the workshop, you will become a Certified TNR Caretaker and be eligible for free or low-cost spay/neuter, trap loans, transportation for cats and traps, educational and networking events, newsletters, community outreach materials, and other services and support within the five boroughs of New York City provided by the NYC Feral Cat Initiative of the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals, the ASPCA, and other area organizations.

Note: The benefits of an in-person workshop include face-to-face interaction with the instructor, hands-on practice with traps, and the ability to network with fellow caretakers. While attending an in-person workshop is the preferred method for learning about TNR, if you absolutely cannot attend an in-person workshop, we hope you will use the online certification option.

Option 1

Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) and Colony Care Workshop

Learn the steps of humane trapping and pre- and post-spay/neuter surgery care with the help of video and live demonstrations

Practice using a box trap and divider for trapping and in-trap care

Learn the basics of caring for a cat colony

Learn how to build good relationships with neighbors throughout the TNR process and how to help the cats be good neighbors

Attendees will become Certified TNR Caretakers in NYC and receive our Guide to Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) and Colony Care.

Option 2Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) and Colony Care Online Course

This self-paced, free recorded webinar offers instruction on how to be a safe and effective caretaker of feral and stray cat colonies by using TNR. Each step in the TNR process is described in detail and enhanced with video demonstrations. You will learn about working with neighbors and the community at large; best practices for colony feeding; setting up adequate shelter; arranging for spay/neuter, trapping (including preparations, equipment, and techniques); and caring for the cats pre- and post-spay/neuter surgery. In addition, the course discusses why TNR works to reduce feral cat numbers and why other methods — such as trap and remove — have failed. Course materials include a detailed script, three videos, and a downloadable copy of our Guide to Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) and Colony Care.

Upon completion, you will become eligible to register as a Certified TNR Caretaker in NYC.
